Venice Italian School

    we want you to learn

The recipe is easy. In order to learn the language one needs to develop the 4 skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Every serious learner needs them all. Obviously, everyone has different needs and priorities, so each person may prefer to focus on one or more of these skills according to his/her needs: tailor made lessons are provided for individuals or groups.

Beginners

Breaking the ice…

No previous knowledge of the language.

Lessons will be aimed at giving you the foundations of the Italian language (alphabet, pronunciation, present tense) as well as the first practical devices to be able to communicate “on the ground”. General knowledge for giving/asking personal info (name, nationality, profession, likes/dislikes, free time) will be accompanied by more specific lessons targeting bar/hotel/restaurant situations. There will be plenty of speaking practice in both mock situations as well as real life.

Elementary

…the ice is broken!!

Basic communication is possible with assistance and you understand simple sentences when spoken slowly and clearly.

At this level, you should be already familiar with most of the grammar points and situations covered by the previous one. A quick revision of fundamental grammar points (mainly made in practical/communicative role plays) such as the present tense will be followed by a special focus on the most important past tenses (passato prossimo/imperfetto) and their differences both in terms of structure and use.

Intermediate

Stepping up!!

You can make effective and independent use of the language in familiar situations.

Once you are familiar with present and past tenses, we can move forward to other language points: conditional and imperative are required in most everyday conversations: from polite requests, to the “formal” register of talking used by Italians on many occasions. This is the level where you will get familiar with them. Conversations with Venetian guests, role plays and listening practice will be part of this course.

Upper intermediate

Adesso parliamo italiano!!

Your use of the language is consistent and usually appropriate but lapses in fluency and accuracy occur in complex situations.

Here we will cover rather high levels of grammar: subjunctive, combined and relative pronouns, indefinite adjectives/pronouns, imperfect subjunctive: at this level the subjects and the pace of the course will be pretty much dictated by the knowledge and the homogeneity of the group. The “max 6 people policy” usually helps a lot in this respect. We will also encourage as many activities as possible which involve active interaction with local people: from markets places of interest to bars and restaurants, from getting to know new people to films watching: you can speak Italian now…so let’s use it!

Advanced

Vabbe’, adesso viene il bello...

You have an excellent command of the language and can tackle the most difficult tasks.
